The short game and putting are the secrets for high handicap players to truly see visual improvement on their score card.

Learning touch and feel is critical to develop confidence and consistency to get the ball close to the hole.

Most players should chip the ball when possible. This shot requires less precision and generally will provide better results if conditions allow the shot to be chosen.

Chip Shot
Less air, more run. This shot is used around the green with a less lofted club to achieve a shot that spends less time in the air and more time, and distance, on the green.
  • Keep solid lead wrist
  • Use 6-9 iron based upon roll distance
  • Fly ball only far enough to land on green
  • Most weight on front foot, hands in front of ball

Pitch
More air, less run. This shot requires more loft on the club and is used further from the green and when a chip shot isn't possible due to short siding yourself (no green to work with).
  • Weight on front foot
  • Enough wrist cock for slight downward blow
  • Accelerate through impact zone
  • Gauge the length of the swing based upon the distance requirement
  • Use an even back and front swing
  • Heavy rough - Open club face & test how the club passes through
  • Tight or bare lie - Don't get tight & keep still through impact
