How do you grip a golf club?

Do you grip it and rip it? For me that means a long drive right into the trees!

I achieve the best results by using a firm grip with loose shoulders and elbows to get snap through the ball but also to allow the club to swing freely.

Calluses are caused by tight grips and by twisting and contorting them around in unnatural ways.

Strong Grip

A strong grip is achieved by showing more knuckles on the lead hand when gripping the club. This also causes the V (part of your hand between the thumb and index finger) to point toward your rear shoulder.

Remember to match the trailing hand with the lead hand. Many beginning golfers have weak lead hands and way to strong trailing hands which causes the thumb to be on the wrong side of the club.

A strong grip promotes a draw or hook ball flight.

Weak Grip

A weak grip is exactly the opposite. Less knuckles can be seen on the lead hand when gripping the club. The V is pointing towards your lead shoulder. This grip promotes a fade or slice ball flight.

Types of Grips

Interlocking
The forefinger (littlest) on the top hand is laced between the ring finger and forefinger of the bottom hand. Use this grip if you have short fingers.

Overlapping
This is where the forefinger on the top hand sits on top of the ring finger and forefinger of the bottom hand betwwen the knuckles. This grip is widely used by pro's and novice players with slight differences of finger placement. Many players with longer fingers use this grip.

Ten finger
The baseball grip is common for women and older players to achieve more distance. Remember that a baseball bat is held more in the palm of the hand while a golf club resides more in the fingers.

the difference was monumental. with both the 7 iron and my driver, i hit
